About

Kearnygalaxy.com is the student newspaper website for the Kearny High School Educational Complex, part of the San Diego Unified School District. The Complex is made up of 4 separate small high schools, including:

Beginning the 2009-10 school year, the Kearny Galaxy changed from a paper based format to the web. In doing so we:

  • Bring the news to you in a more timely fashion: Instead of monthly editions, the kearnygalaxy.com will be updated a few times a week. Later, we hope, updates will happen several times a day.
  • Leverage the visual: The print edition, because of cost, was a black and white photocopy. That meant that the awesome art and photography of students was poorly represented. No more- not only are we full color, but with the web we can post the great multimedia work done by Kearny Complex students.
  • Appeal to a wider audience: Access to the Galaxy is now only limited by access to an internet connection. We’re worldwide now!
  • Want to make our site a conversation: Like other blogs, you can comment, participate in surveys, and let your voice be heard! Yes, you must register to comment, yes, your comments are reviewed, and yes, you must be civilized with what you post- but post away!
  • Reduce costs: Times are tough all around- not printing a paper means money saved. That also means more of the advertising revenue generated can go towards scholarships for the Galaxy staff and sorely needed new equipment.
  • Yes, are trying to save the earth: Not only are we no longer doing a print edition, but our own operations are entirely online. No paper used, no trees cut down- going green feels good.

Building this site was made easier due to the awesome online tools available. We are a Wordpress based blog , and use a basic template (themed “look”) titled Arthemia 1.0 by Michael Jubel Hutagalun. Without the hard work and software created for free by generous people around the world we could not have put up this site. If we could do it, anyone can.
