[By Sally Student | 31 May 2010 | No Comment | 53 views]
Dear Sally, I’m Going to College

Dear Sally,
My boyfriend and I have been together since freshman year, but now we’re going our separate ways to colleges on opposite sides of the United States. Should we stay together, or break-up because long distance is just too hard?
Love,
College Bound
Dear College Bound,
I think this decision is up to you. Long distance relationship isn’t for everyone- but it does work from time to time. The thing is, when you and your boyfriend go away to college in a few months a whole new world will open to you both- …

Getting Huge With Ali

Guest writer: Ali Vongsathian, DMD Senior
I’m five-eight, weigh one hundred and twenty-five pounds, and I want to get ripped. I’m sure most guys want to do the same thing. I’ve been working out for one year and have built seven pounds of muscle.
Why did I start? I started because one day last summer I went to the beach and realized that I was really skinny. After just a few minutes of time on the sand, I became embarrassed to show my body.
I decided to put my shirt back on.
When I …

Summer Time

Going to the beach, hanging out with friends, working a minimum wage job, or staying up till dawn and sleeping in till noon. Summer is near, and students at Kearny can’t stop thinking about and planning for their vacations.
Summer may only be 6 weeks away, but, for some, that feels like a lifetime away because the last few weeks of school are the ones filled with big projects, assessments, and tests.
“The hardest part is the anticipation, and the hard tests that they give us at the end of the year.” …

Stop, Drop and Roll

Isn’t kind of funny how we have been practicing disaster drills since kindergarten, preparing for emergency situations, yet when one really happens we lose sense of what to do? On Easter Sunday, an earthquake of magnitude of 7.2 occured, stronger then the one that recently happend in Haiti.
I remember I was at a friends house celebrating Easter when all the sudden the ground started shaking slightly. The motion then got harder, and it felt like it lasted forever. I, of course, just stood there, instead of heading for a doorway …

History of Valentines Days

With reporting by Aaliyah Anjal-Nelson
“I Love You,” “Be Mine”… All words associated with February 14th. Valentines Day.  Also known as the “Cupids Holiday”. But for students at Kearny Valentines Day is not a holiday just for couples. An annual ASB tradition is to make red hearts and stick them on all the walls around school.
Students, as usual, ran around like crazy trying to find each others hearts, wearing those of friends, significant others, and teachers.
Kearny has its own twist on the typical holiday ideas of expensive roses, fancy dinners, and …

[By Sally Student | 23 Feb 2010 | No Comment | 67 views]
Dear Sally,

Dear Sally,
One of my closest friends is slowly distancing herself from me, I am really afraid she might be suicidal. What do I do?
Love,
Concerned Friend
Dear Concerned Friend,
Suicide is a huge issue, so do not under estimate it. As a friend you always want to be there for your friend. Usually suicidal teens are feeling hopeless, which is completely normal. When people talk about suicide it usually means that they are in pain, and all they want is for that pain to go away. If you are worried about them find …

A Program that Will Change the Medical Field

Without question, San Diego is one of the most heterogeneous cities in the United States. Therefore it is no surprise to see that many have a different culture and different perspective in certain matters, including the way they receive medical treatment. Of these there are those who for religious or personal reasons wish to avoid blood transfusions during surgery.
Of all the hospitals in San Diego County, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is the only one that offers an established and well organized program for such patients, the Bloodless Medicine and …

Disaster Strikes Haiti

Imagine a normal day spent with family and friends as you go about your own business, stressing about certain problems in your life or perhaps just reflecting on your day, or maybe just thinking about what you were going to have for dinner. Then, all of a sudden, you begin to feel the ground shake from beneath you, catching you completely off guard. As you try to run for cover, the only thing only thing that matters is where you are going to flee for safety. The buildings around you …
